Adele - Someone Like You - Lead Sheet

Someone Like You: Verse

When playing the verse of Someone Like You, it is important to play the piano chords evenly: Not too loud, a little solemn, but also with power. The four chords are A major, C# minor, F# minor, and D major.

The piano chords are played in three voices, with the bass playing the notes A, G#, F#, and D in descending order.

Someone Like You – Pre-Chorus

The pre-chorus is the part between the verse and the chorus. Here the chorus is preceded by three chords: E major, F# minor, D major.

Someone Like You – Chorus

This is where the song really takes off, with the chorus varying the 4-chord pattern from the verse: The chords – now a semitone higher – produce a more vibrant sound. However, the chord changes are twice as fast as in the verse.

Playing Piano Chords as Arpeggios

Playing piano chords as arpeggios may be a challenge for beginners. This refers to playing the piano chords that accompany the song as a continuous series of individual notes in succession. It takes some practice and persistence to master this technique.

The key points to remember when playing piano accompaniment:

  • Play the sequence of notes at a steady tempo
  • Play with feeling and expression, not mechanically

For Good Timing: Practice with a Metronome!

Once you have the chords down, practice with a metronome to help you focus on timing.
Tip: Setting the metronome to double speed (120-130 bpm) makes it easier to practice in rhythm.

The sustain pedal is intended to sustain and connect notes. When playing with the sustain pedal, make sure that chord changes are properly separated, i.e., that you don’t hold the sustain pedal too long during the chord change. Depress the pedal again on each chord.

Basic Chord Accompaniment for Beginners

If playing the arpeggio accompaniment is too difficult for you, try playing the chords on beats 1-2-3-4 to add some rhythm to the accompaniment. Or you can just play the intro in arpeggio style and then accompany the vocals with chords on 1-2-3-4. Just try whatever works and sounds good to you.
