  • Studiologic’s SL series MIDI controllers are receiving a major update.

The MIDI controllers of the SL series are popular not only for their affordability, but above all for their flexibility, intuitive design, high-quality keyboards, and robust construction. At NAMM 2025, the Italian manufacturer unveiled the new Studiologic SL-mk2 series.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… In line with this motto, the new Studiologic SL-mk2 models closely resemble their predecessors. While much remains the same, key refinements make the SL-mk2 series even more compelling—especially with only a moderate price increase (€480–€900).

The biggest upgrades come from the Numa X series, including a color-coded UX tailored to the four MIDI zones and USB audio/MIDI support for seamless integration with computers and mobile devices. Additionally, Studiologic has integrated the free Numa Player, which transforms the SL-mk2 controllers into powerful stage pianos, either as a piano VST or as an iOS app.

High-Quality Keyboards

As a brand of the Italian manufacturer Fatar, Studiologic naturally equips its instruments with the latest Fatar keyboards, which are said to have been further refined compared to the previous series. The three SL-mk2 models share the same technical features and differ only in their keyboards.

For those looking for a compact and portable option, the SL73 Studio mk2 weighs just 11 kg, making it easy to transport. Despite its lightweight design, it still offers a satisfying playing experience thanks to the Fatar TP/100 keyboard—the same action found in the larger SL88 Studio mk2.

For the ultimate playing experience, the SL88 GT mk2 features the premium Fatar TP/400 Wood hybrid wooden keyboard. However, this comes at a higher price—and a significantly heavier 21 kg build.

More Information

MIDI 2.0

Although not yet widely adopted as the new standard, MIDI 2.0 represents a significant evolution of the MIDI protocol and is expected to gain broader support over time. Given its powerful enhancements and advantages, it’s surprising that it hasn’t already become the new standard.

With the SL-mk2 series, MIDI 2.0 enables much higher dynamic resolution, allowing for greater nuance and expressiveness when playing.

Controller, DAW & UX Design

We’ve already praised the UX design of Studiologic’s Numa X 73 and Numa X 88 stage pianos, and now the same approach has made its way into the SL-mk2 series. The new models feature four endless rotary encoders, each with a color-coded LED ring to indicate which MIDI zone it controls.

These encoders also double as DAW controls as well as pressure-sensitive knobs for mute/solo functions. Further, they allow seamless sequencer track navigation along with essential transport controls.

Compared to the previous generation, the SL-mk2 models now feature only two joysticks instead of three, but gain two additional controllers. These are fully programmable for each of the 100 patches and can perform a variety of tasks.

Studiologic confirms compatibility with Ableton Live, Apple Logic Pro, Steinberg Cubase, and any Mackie Control-compatible DAW software.

Built-in Audio Interface

The Studiologic SL-mk2 keyboards are more than just MIDI controllers—they are also designed for seamless integration with DAWs, piano VSTs, and mobile devices on stage. Thanks to the built-in USB audio/MIDI interface, you can route audio from external devices directly through the SL-mk2’s audio outputs. Another key advantage: Power is supplied via USB-C, meaning you can use any compatible charger without relying on a proprietary power adapter.

Additional connectivity options include MIDI In & Out, stereo audio output (L/R), headphone output, and three pedal inputs that support switch pedals, continuous controllers (half-pedal support), and universal configurations.

The Verdict: Something Great Just Got Even Better…

…and remains affordable! We’re looking forward to a detailed hands-on test of the new SL keyboards. The new features sound promising and appear to be thoughtfully implemented: with an integrated audio interface and an enhanced operating concept inspired by the proven UX design of the Numa X stage pianos, the SL-mk2 models stand out as versatile and powerful controller keyboards for both live performance and studio production.
