Many MIDI controllers try to attract buyers with an abundance of hardware features: From drum pads and faders to buttons, knobs, and more, these devices are often packed with countless extras. Studiologic, however, takes a completely different approach with its SL series. The focus of the SL88 Grand is entirely on the quality of the keyboard and the playing experience it provides.

Studiologic SL Series

The Italian manufacturer offers MIDI controllers with high-quality keybeds at a competitive price. After reviewing its smaller sibling, the SL88 Studio, we now turn our attention to the Studiologic SL88 Grand. As with other SL Series controllers, the only real difference between these models is the keybed. So, is the extra cost worth it?

Playing Feel: Top Notch!

As already mentioned, the affordability of the SL controllers is a major highlight. With the TP/40Wood keyboard, Studiologic manages to offer a piano controller with a hybrid wooden keys for well under €1,000—an impressive feat. In terms of playability, the SL88 Grand feels absolutely fantastic.

For me, the playing experience is extremely realistic, thanks in large part to the perfectly weighted keys. Fatar has struck an ideal balance with the TP/40Wood, requiring just the right amount of force while providing a strong sense of control and precision. This is further enhanced by the fact that the keys retain a satisfyingly solid and well-defined feel when fully depressed.

The key surfaces of the Fatar TP/40Wood with Ivory Touch are well crafted, although the artificial ivory texture is only noticeable on the white keys.

At the same time, the keyboard has a remarkably smooth action, making the SL88 Grand incredibly comfortable to play—even fast passages feel effortless. The key rebound is also excellent on the TP/40Wood, allowing trills to be executed with ease.

Sturdy Case

Apart from the keyboard and display, the entire surface of the controller is made of matte painted metal. This gives the SL88 Grand a sleek, high-quality, and durable appearance. In addition to the three joysticks and display, the panel offers ample space for your setup—practical for placing a tablet, for example. An iPad with a magnetic screen cover stays securely on the metal surface, as does the SL|Mixface controller extension.

Relatively Lightweight

Weighing in at 20.8 kg, this MIDI controller owes most of its weight to the hammer action. Compared to similar instruments, however, this is actually quite manageable—the Kawai VPC1, for example, is considerably heavier at almost 30 kg.

Whether for live performance or studio use, the Studiologic SL Series keyboards offer extensive connectivity for controlling both software and hardware.

MIDI Features of the Studiologic SL88 Grand

At the heart of the operating system are four instrument zones. This setup allows you to control up to four sound generators, layer multiple sounds, or assign them to different zones across the keyboard in split mode. The encoder is used not only to activate the instruments but also to adjust key parameters such as volume and split points. Additionally, you can store up to 250 presets, and create MIDI groups for more advanced setups.

For even greater flexibility, the SL Editor software (available for Windows and macOS) unlocks additional settings that are not directly accessible from the hardware.

Studiologic SL88 Grand vs. SL88 Studio

As mentioned above, the main difference between these two 88-key MIDI controllers is the keyboard itself—otherwise, all SL models share the same features.

For musicians who frequently perform live and need a more portable option, the SL88 Studio is a solid choice. However, if weight isn’t a concern and you’re looking for one of the best hammer action keyboards available, the SL88 Grand is hard to beat.

Overall, the SL series shines with well-balanced and responsive keyboards. Whether you’re using Pianoteq or other piano VSTs and apps, these controllers provide a natural playing experience without requiring extensive velocity adjustments. That said, when it comes to piano sounds, the difference between the Studio and Grand models is noticeable—the SL88 Grand offers even greater nuance and control over sound expression.
