If you’re looking for an affordable entry-level option and prefer a classic cabinet style digital piano with solid quality, you should expect to spend a bit more. However, the Casio AP-470 and its more compact sibling, the AP-270, have been on the market for some time, which probably contributes to their attractive prices. Both are available for less than €1,000.

We compared Casio’s entry-level models and came to a surprisingly positive conclusion. Not only are they budget-friendly, but they also offer a solid range of features and convincing piano sounds.

For absolute beginners, it’s also worth checking out retailer bundles that include useful accessories like a piano bench and headphones. Even the larger model in such a bundle only slightly exceeds the €1,000 mark.

Everything Included

Both Casio digital pianos are available in different finishes—black, brown, and white. When it comes to features, they are nearly identical in terms of internal specifications: the number of sounds, polyphony, and functions are the same for both the Casio AP-470 and AP-270.

The main differences lie in two areas: the cabinet design and the speaker system. This will help you decide which model is better suited to your needs.

Differences in Design

The cabinets differ in size, but both models offer everything you’d expect from a classic digital upright piano: three pedals (sustain, sostenuto, and soft), a sliding key cover, and a built-in music rest.

Different Speaker Systems, But…

There’s a visible difference with the Casio AP-47: It has a piano lid that opens and closes. This electronically replicates the way sound is shaped and projected on an acoustic piano. Opening the lid enhances the piano sound with richer overtones and a more resonant character.

If you often play through the built-in speakers and want to fill your living room with rich piano sound, the AP-470 is worth a closer look. Its 2 x 20-watt amplifier definitely does the job well.

The AP-270, on the other hand, is ideal for a music room, a child’s room, or for players who mostly use headphones. And here’s the surprise we found in our test: When it comes to headphone sound, the quality of both AP models is absolutely identical! There’s no difference whatsoever—check out our video review with sound comparisons.

Great Feel on Both Models

No matter which model you choose, the feel of playing remains the same. That’s because the Casio AP-470 and AP-270 share the same keyboard.  The scaled hammer action isn’t too heavy, but offers enough resistance for nuanced control over touch and dynamics.

The keyboard features a triple-sensor system that accurately captures dynamic expression and supports fast note repetition. While there’s no let-off simulation (typical in this price range), the Ebony/Ivory Feel keytops provide a comfortable feel.

Excellent Sounds

In addition to a solid keyboard, the way an entry-level digital piano translates dynamics into sound is equally important. Both models do this impressively well. The piano tone is reminiscent of a brilliant, full-bodied concert grand; I’d guess a Steinway.

The sound is expressive and comes in several variations, some a bit softer in the overtone spectrum, others more percussive or pop-like. “Grand Piano 2” is essentially a variant of the main sound, but there’s nothing to complain about here: Whether you’re playing classical, jazz, rock, or soul, these piano sounds deliver.

The quality of the other sounds is just as convincing. From vintage electric pianos like the Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer to FM pianos, these sounds are stylishly rendered and a real joy to play. The usual “filler sounds” like strings, harpsichord, and vibraphone are also nicely done. In total, you get 22 sounds.

Easy Operation

Operating the mini control panel to the left of the keyboard may feel a bit fiddly at first, but it’s made easier by the helpful labels—a common approach in this price range. Things get even more intuitive with Casio Music Space, the free remote control app available for iOS and Android. It makes navigating the instrument’s many features clear and user-friendly.

Just a few taps on the screen are enough to set up even complex split and layer sounds. The app also gives you full access to all the core settings, allowing for easy customization. Of course, both the AP-470 and AP-270 include all the essential features you’d expect: Transpose, fine-tuning, USB-MIDI connectivity, and more—nothing’s missing here!

Conclusion: High Performance at a Low Price

Both models are highly recommended as affordable entry-level digital pianos. The clear differences between the models will make your decision easy: If you’re looking for the best price, the more compact AP-270 is a solid choice. The only real trade-offs are the cabinet size and speaker system.

When it comes to the essential features of keyboard action, touch, and piano sound, both models are identical, at least when played through headphones. If speaker sound and a more premium design are more important to you, the larger AP-470 is the way to go.
